It was Gilbert O’Sullivan’s first solo gig in 40 years and he made an exception to his own golden rule – he played without band and backing singers to perform a stunning, unique set at The Cavern.

Gilbert always sells out his shows – his 50th anniversary tour no exception. He is playing the Philharmonic Hall in March.

But this concert in the intimate confines of The Cavern celebrating 60 years since its opening was simply sparkling.

it was a honour to be there. The show of the year in the company of a real-life musical VIP.

Fans sang along and danced to the Gilbert back-catalogue in the Lounge Suite where Paul McCartney played his famous solo gig in 1999.

It was a magical experience seeing and hearing Gilbert the craftsman without a band – alone (unnaturally) on stage.

He smiled, laughed and even sang a ditty featuring Jurgen Klopp urging the audience to join in.

The man born Raymond O ‘Sullivan in Waterford, said he was honoured to be asked to be part of the Cavern’s celebration.

He praised its incredible history.

Sporting a red and black shirt, he displayed why at 70 he is still one of the most-respected and well-loved singer-songwriters in the music industry.

Opening with Thunder and Lightning from his debut album Gilbert O’Sullivan Himself it was a magical history tour through his albums such as Back To Front and I’m A Writer Not A Fighter.

Soundtracks to so many lives in the room – including mine .

The elated audience knew every lyric and melody and lapped up hits such as Nothing Rhymed, What’s In A Kiss , Matrimony , Clair, Get Down and his most recent success No Way.

Ballads and rockers from his 50 year career illustrated why he was inducted into the Cavern’s Wall of Fame in this anniversary week.

Gilbert , whose family joined him for this wonderful night, said he loves Liverpool – a second home.

Well, it is clear on this – another show of deserved adulation – that the city loves him back
