70’s icon Gilbert O’Sullivan topped the charts throughout the decade with endearing, melodic pop songs. Still held in high esteem by his fans and heavily rotated on Radio 2’s playlist today, he is set to release a superb collection of musings via BMG this Spring.

Irish born, British singer songwriter Gilbert with his trademark frizzy hair, made his top 10 debut into the UK charts with ‘Nothing Rhymed’ in 1970.  Managed by Gordon Mills, who also looked after Tom Jones & Engelbert Humperdinck, Gilbert was a cheeky young boy, who played the piano and sang lyrics that captured the humour and hearts of everyone. He became the perfect face and voice for 70’s TV, regularly appearing on the wealth of music and prime time variety shows from that era.  With his second album came the hit ‘Alone Again’ that took America by storm and sent Gilbert rocketing up the charts in both the UK and US.

Gilbert had 3 British number 1’s in succession with ‘Clair’, ‘Get Down’ and ‘Back To Front’, received three Ivor Novello’s awards and recorded a popular duet with Peggy Lee. Gilbert’s career has remained prolific. The ‘00s saw Gilbert enjoying a career revival with ‘The Berry Vest of Gilbert O’Sullivan’, which returned him to the UK Top 20 in 2004. Gilbert also performed well-received shows at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival and at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2009.

His 2012 compilation entered the UK album charts at number 12, and on the heels of this success Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day’ became the theme song for the UK National Lottery adverts. His last album ‘Latin Ala G!’ a homeage to the Peggy Lee classic, spawned three singles, the second of which, a remix of ‘No Way’ by Greg Fitzgerald, (Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Madonna), made the BBC Radio 2 A list, leading to a rapturously received performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra on R2’s long-running ‘Friday Night Is Music Night ‘in February 2016. The latest single, the wistful ‘I Guess I’ll Always Love You’, is currently on R2’s playlist.

2016’s 43 song 2CD anthology ‘Gilbert O’Sullivan: The Essential Collection’ is truly a definitive career overview, stretching from before his first hit ‘Nothing Rhymed’ to his current single ‘I Guess I’ll Always Love You’. The track-listing has been personally selected by Gilbert, who said, “The nice thing about putting together this compilation is that it allowed me to re-visit and choose many of the songs I’m most proud of, whether they be taken from various albums or released as singles.” After successful touring in the UK and Ireland throughout 2015 fans can expect further tour dates for 2016 to be announced soon.
